29 Question on Front floor oo to lower pedal firewall

Just installed the lower gas pedal firewall and test fitted the front wood floor piece the is under the firewall. There are about 6 
screw holes along the lower firewall just above the lip. I have about 1/4"-3/8" gap between that flange and the wood floor. The 6 holes 

appear to connect to a angle piece joining the floor and the firewall.

Anyone please give me an idea as to what that piece is/was....wood, metal, etc.
