At a local cruise night/car show I saw a 53 hornet with a 308 that had an unusual appendage in the block casting. Can anyone tell me more about this "ledge" on the side of the block with the casting numbers on it? I circled it in red. Thanks.

It is a 55-56 block

You can also see, below the distributor, between the re-enforcing rib and the pan rail, is the boss that the dipstick goes through on the later engines.
