Speaker replacement in a 53 Hornet

I'd like to replace the front speaker in my Hornet. All the candidates I have tried have turned out to be too thick around the outside rim, and so the grille won't fit down into the dash properly. What are you all using here? The other thread I found about speakers referred to a 54, which has a much larger dash cutout.

  • Is yours going to be for a 6 or 12 volt system?
  • Its still 6v pos. Although I dont see why that would matter. The radio has been recapped and tubed, its the speaker that needs attention.

  • Actually it's more the ohm rating of the speaker. If you're looking to replace a 6 volt speaker it needs to be a  4 ohm rating.  The newer the better. Older speakers aren't really as good as the newer models. A number of 12 volt speakers don't have that rating. You just need to find a fairly common 6X9 speaker.
  • Lance is right, you want to stick with 4 Ohm or you could damage the radio. This guy has what you need. He's not cheap though. http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm
