Reference your question, yes behind the sheet metal there is another piece spot welded on unibody frame which center back section is welded on. I'll attach a couple more pictures of before and after weld. Pic one, before removal of center piece, pic two shows rust back guard piece spot welded to unibody frame, pic three, after Allen fabricated back guard sheet metal, sprayed primer weld 2 and welded to unibody frame, note center piece inside trunk with surface rust that Allen also fabricated and shaped like original part intended.
