212 bad vacuum advance- wondering if I can adapt a "generic" vacuum unit?

So I discovered that I'm not getting vacuum advance on my 47 Super Six. Makes acceleration difficult! I found a few NOS vacuum advance units on ebay, but the guy wants $80 for each... I might have to break down and pay it, but I can't help but wonder if I could adapt an off-the-shelf vacuum advance can for something much more common (like a SBC)? Of course there's the question of getting it to pull the right amount at full vacuum... would appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

This should not make any difference at  all to acceleration as the unit is specifically to retard the  timing on low vacuum (accelerating).  However, it will definitely affect gas mileage.  Yes, you can adapt a generic  unit to your original by finding something that will fit on your original  unit and making  it to fit, using your original spring.  I have done this on my Jet and Hornet, and on a '48  8 cyl.
