That looks like a tapered pipe thread. Sealant should not be required.

Looks like a miniature of the wire wheel hubcaps. 12 facets If I remember right, coming to a point.

Awesome!  Fantastic ideas, I shall try it out on an inconspicuous area at first to see if I can duplicate your results and hopefully go for full roll-out if desirable results achieved.  This car has no appreciable damage anywhere, just a haze of rust and scratches/small dents and deserving of a preservation of its completely-original finish.
