Tom is properly concerned about his brakes coming down Pike's Peak. Well,
Tom, don't forget your gears! Just because your Super Six will climb the hill
in top or second doesn't mean that you need to come down in the same gear. In
first gear you would be unlikely to use your brakes at all. Second allows
more speed but still allows a fair amount of compression breaking. You may
annoy a few people by driving so slowly, but . . .
Due to the low compression ratios used in the 20s, the motor will not
hold you as well as a modern engine of the same displacement would.
Nonetheless, gearing down should be all you really need. Is there a spot to
pull over and allow your brakes to cool on the trip down? Perhaps it would be
worth while to plans on a few breaks on the way down.
