Scanned patent drawings for the 1922 Essex coach body

Today I came across a patent for the 1922 Essex coach body, with perspective drawings of the wood framework. In the text, Stephen Fekete describes that "The particular object of the invention is to provide a closed body which can be constructed for the same or a little more than the cost of an ordinary open body. To that end I have employed a novel frame composed largely of straight pieces of wood, thereby reducing the expense for labor ..." The patent is US1550526 (PDF file).

I didn't spot anything similar in the club library, so I thought I'd post it here in case someone's interested. As far as I can see, the framework in the drawing is an exact match for the photos in Butler's book (p. 83).

Brilliant. I don't have an Essex and will most probably never own one, but you have to love this type of detailed information.

Thanks. The search turned up all kinds of interesting inventions, including freeze plugs, spark plug connectors and other interesting things, like how the body is fastened together, and the design of the Super Six engine. Interesting reading shows the creativeness of the Hudson engineers.

Note the fine print - the application was filed as early as January 1915! (The date in bold print says when it was issued, which could be years later.) That was about five months before the patent for the balanced crankshaft was filed.

This engine must've been part of the experimental program Don Butler describes (p. 41), "which examined an ordinary six, a sleeve-valve V8 and a V-12", with the goal to develop a 70+ hp engine that was as smooth as a V-type, to compete with the Cadillac V8 and Packard V12. It resulted in the Super-Six.
