Thermostat housing leak

Recently replaced (stock style) thermostat on my '54 and ran into many problems getting it to seal.

Overtightened and cracked waterneck housing. Replaced one, welded another. New gaskets with sealer. Longer bolts. Lathed thermostat to fit flush inside housing lip. Test fit with bolts appeared flush/flat.  Any suggestions, tips? Shorter bolts? studs with nuts? Different gasket?

  • So you have a new one, and a welded one, and neither work?  How does the head look, where the neck mates up?  Maybe the uneven area lies there...

I used a gasket with red permatex on both sides, and didn't have any problems.  I was always told never to overtighten those, as the ears can snap off.  I can see now they weren't kidding!

Lance Walker may have a new one if needed.
  • :# Stephen, I got the replacements from Lance Walker.  The head looks fine, took a file across it to be sure and did not appear to be any high/low spots.  I was careful on the last install not to overtighten but may try a *little* more tightening
