Brake drum installation

I have been told that when one re-installs brake drums; the rears get tightened until the cotter pin will slip through the castle nut. On the front one tightens the castle nut and then backs off one turn.

Is that correct?

Not quite.  The rears must be done up to 120ft.lbs, and then  a bit more if the split pin does not go in.  The fronts are done up until there is no play in  the bearing, and the split pin installed.

Thanks Geoff, I did not see that information in my procedural manual.
