The pinion seal seems to be seeping in our 54 Hornet. Where should the vent pipe be located.I asked the person to have it replaced but the garage said it was ok.  Hudsonly  Ray

Not aware of any "pipe"  Ray, but there is a vent on the shaft housing. It's a small screw on type vent.

Ray, I think I made a mistake. The rear ends I was thinking of were the Hudson built rear ends not the Dana/Spicer rear ends. I went and checked on my Dana 44 rear ends and lo and behold -no vents!. The Hudson built ones are the ones I must have had in mind. My mistake.
  • The vent is just a small hole in axle housing on driver side.  It appears to be 1/16" on back side of axle housing.

It could be stopped up but think it is more likely the pinion seal is cracked.

I just replaced all bearings and seals in my 1954 Hornet.   It finally needed service at approximately 400,000 miles.
