I was lucky enough to buy a brand new carb for my 38 Hudson 8 I think it was off a 40 but it worked perfect

First: are you sure your problem is with the carburetor?  Could your low speed problems be attributable to something else?

Second: it might be that a newer version of your carburetor might work better, due to the improvement over the years.  Example: I have a 1937 Terraplane (six) and years ago I replaced the original with a 501-S Carter, which was used from 1941-47.  It seemed to work better and give me better gasoline mileage.  (It did require transplanting the old cross-shaft into the new carb, though, in order to make the car's linkage fit the new carb.  This was easily done.)  So what I'm wondering is, has anyone attempted transplanting a newer version of the 8-cylinder carb into a 1938?  Maybe that's the way to go.

Finally: are you sure that the person who rebuilt your carburetor was using the right parts, knew what he was doing, and replaced all the worn parts? (I believe I've heard that the standard carburetor kits don't necessarily contain ALL the parts that could actually be bad, just the most common ones.)  Did the rebuilder have access to the correct factory literature dealing with rebuilding that particular carb?

Daytona Carburetor (Daytona Parts) rebuilt mine (1936 Terraplane) and it is perfect, and was dialed in correctly right out of the box. With a new float it was $225.00.

    I recommend them highly.

I do too, because I had them rebuild my carb (which, as I noted, is for a later year than my '37).  Although I will say that when they first sent it, it didn't work correctly.  They took it back, fixed it and then sent it to me and it ran like a champ!  That was probably 6 or 7 years ago and I haven't had a bit of trouble with it.
  • i sent my carb to a carb specialist in america who said that who ever rebult it did a good job but also comented that they threw out carbs in better condition than mine many have tried here but i think a replacment is my only option to try
  • also everything else has been tested i even replaced the timing cog with a new one and still no joy this problem has buged me for at least two years now.

I'm sorry about your misfortune, but I think the problem is either in your particular carburetor or in the people who are rebuilding it.  The original-type carb has worked fine for most people who rebuild theirs.  I don't think that switching the type of carburetor is going to help you, and in fact it may multiply your woes!  Have you consulted any of the people in the N.Z. Hudson club?  Maybe someone has a spare they can sell you (that works!), or might have some clues as to what is wrong with yours.

I have a lot of Hudson carbies around 1938 if you need one or for parts. Will need the number. Good luck

Let's start from scratch.  Do you have the correct starter in your car.  It's supposed to be a Carter 402-S (a type WDO).  Er, carburetor I mean (thanks, Geoff!)
