Cracked Drum on a Hudson Jet

Just got a call from Firestone. They say one of the rear drums on my '54 Jet is cracked.  I took it to them to be turned before giving the Jet to  my 16-year old daughter.

Any advice on how to move forward? Does anyone have an extra rear drum or two?

I'm really in a pickle. My daughter is taking the car to California on Monday.

Thanks for the help and advice!!
Mike

  • Thought I'd add some pictures of the hairline cracks. Pics 1 & 2 are from one drum.  3 & 4 are from the other.

    Thoughs?

Contact jet set -Sarah Young. Al Saffrahn in AZ might be a source?
  • I've contacted Sarah and she sent out an alert.  But I wish there was a source for new drums.

Those would be ok for a parade car , but not a trip to California.

Take a look at the May/June WTN, page 39, upper left side. NOS Jet Brake drums from Ray P., Not cheap but not easy to find either. Ad doesn't say which end.

Just took a look at the 1954 Hollander Interchange manual and the Hudson Jet is listed as unique to that vehicle. NO INTERCHANGE shown at that time.

BRAKES ARE THE 1ST THING YOU DON'T SKIMP ON SAFETY ABOVE ALL I DEAL IN 55,56,57 HUDSONS AND PARTS MOSTLY I HAVE NEVER SCRAPPED A BAKE DRUM THAT WASN'T SCRAP( OVER SIZE OR CRACKED TO WERE IT COULD NOT BE USED SAFELY)

AND SURLY THERE IS A JET PERSON WHO HAS SOME ON THE SHELF FOR A RAINY DAY
JB WELD IS OUT OF THE QUESTION   EPOY EVEN WHEN DRY BURNS AS DOES JB WELD  BRAKES GET HOT= A FIRE YOU DON'T WANT OR NEED
     AS STATED ABOVE

IF I WERE LOOKING I WOULD BE
    1. JOINING THE JET SET
2.CONTACTING HUDSON PARTS SUPPLIERS BY PHONE
    3. SEARCHING FOR JETS THAT WILL NEVER BE RESTORED ( ONES WITH BAD RUSTED OUT)
    4. PUTTING A ADD IN THE WTN

GOOD LUCK IN YOUR SEARCH!  ;-)
